This page explains how A Gift Personalized’s gambling editorial team scores online casinos and what each part of the rating actually measures. We’re publishing the methodology because vague star ratings without explanation are how affiliate sites have hidden bad recommendations for years, and we don’t want to be one of them.
The Short Version
Every casino we review is scored across seven categories. Each category has a defined weight in the final rating, specific things we look for, and a clear scoring scale. The overall score is calculated, not assigned by feel, and the breakdown is visible on every review page so you can see exactly why a casino landed where it did.
Critically, no casino can score higher than 7.5 out of 10 if it fails any of our non-negotiable safety checks, regardless of how good it looks in other categories. A casino with great bonuses and slow payouts will not crack our top tier no matter how generous the welcome offer is.
The Seven Scoring Categories
Weight Distribution
Below is what each category measures, what we look for during testing, and how scores are assigned. The same framework applies across all four markets we cover, but the specific criteria adapt to local regulations.
Licensing and Safety
This is the foundation of any rating. A casino can have the best games and biggest bonuses on the internet, and it doesn’t matter if you can’t trust them with your money or personal data.
What We Verify
- Licensing claim is verified against the actual regulator’s public database, not just the operator’s website
- SSL encryption is properly implemented across all pages, including signup and deposit forms
- Independent fairness certification (eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI) where applicable to the market
- Ownership transparency — we identify the parent company and verify it’s not on any major regulatory blacklists
- Data protection policies that meet GDPR (for UK and EU-facing sites) or local equivalents
- Track record of regulatory fines, warnings, or license suspensions in the past three years
Scoring Scale
Payout Speed and Reliability
The single most important factor for actual players. A casino that delays payouts or holds withdrawals behind unnecessary verification cycles is a casino that’s hoping you’ll cancel and gamble the money back. We test this directly.
What We Test
- Time from withdrawal request to funds landing in our account, measured per payment method
- Whether KYC verification is requested before or after the first withdrawal (we strongly prefer before)
- Daily, weekly, and monthly withdrawal limits and whether they’re realistic
- Any fees applied to withdrawals, including hidden processing charges
- Customer support response time when withdrawal questions are raised
- Six months of player complaints specifically related to payouts
Scoring Scale
Bonus Terms and Wagering
Big welcome bonuses are easy to advertise. Reasonable bonus terms are rare. We score the actual usefulness of bonus offers based on how realistic it is for an average player to convert them into withdrawable cash.
What We Analyze
- Wagering requirements (anything above 50x is a red flag, anything above 70x is borderline scammy)
- Maximum bet size during bonus play (low caps like £2-£5 are restrictive)
- Game contribution percentages and excluded games
- Time limits to clear wagering (anything under 14 days is restrictive)
- Maximum win caps that limit bonus-derived withdrawals
- Whether deposit amount counts toward wagering
Scoring Scale
Game Selection and Quality
Game count alone is meaningless. A casino with 5,000 games from low-tier studios is worse than one with 800 games from premium providers. We score variety, provider quality, and how well the lobby actually serves players.
What We Evaluate
- Range of premium providers (NetEnt, Pragmatic Play, Evolution, Play’n GO, Hacksaw Gaming, Nolimit City)
- Slot variety across volatility levels and theme categories
- Live dealer selection, including peak-hour table availability
- Table game depth (blackjack variants, roulette options, baccarat)
- Whether published RTPs match provider standards (some operators reduce them)
- Mobile compatibility and game loading speeds
Banking and Payment Methods
Different markets have different payment expectations. UK players want fast e-wallets and Open Banking. US players need solutions that actually work around banking restrictions. Australians often prefer crypto. We score based on what’s relevant to each market.
What We Check
- Number and variety of deposit methods relevant to the player’s region
- Minimum and maximum deposit limits across methods
- Currencies supported (especially GBP, USD, CAD, AUD for our markets)
- Crypto support, including which coins and confirmation requirements
- Whether deposit and withdrawal methods match (asymmetric methods are a red flag)
- Processing fees on either deposits or withdrawals
Customer Support
Support quality is invisible until you need it, and then it’s everything. We test it during the review process by asking real questions about bonus terms and withdrawal policies.
What We Test
- Live chat availability hours (24/7 vs. limited hours)
- Response time during peak and off-peak periods
- Whether agents can actually answer policy questions or just deflect to FAQs
- Email response time for non-urgent inquiries
- Available languages (especially relevant for the four markets we cover)
- Quality of self-service resources like FAQs and help centers
User Experience
How does it actually feel to use the site? This category covers the things that don’t fit elsewhere but affect every interaction with the casino.
What We Assess
- Site speed and stability across desktop and mobile
- Registration process complexity (a 10-minute signup is excessive)
- Mobile experience, including dedicated apps where available
- Lobby navigation and game search functionality
- Account dashboard clarity (transaction history, bonus tracking, limits)
- Quality of responsible gambling tools (deposit limits, time limits, self-exclusion)
Automatic Score Caps
Some failures are bad enough that they cap the maximum possible rating regardless of how the casino performs in other categories. These are non-negotiable.
Issues That Cap Maximum Score
- Unverifiable or fraudulent licensing claim caps rating at 3.0
- Documented pattern of withdrawal denials caps rating at 4.5
- Wagering requirements above 70x cap rating at 6.5
- Asymmetric deposit/withdrawal methods cap rating at 7.0
- Lack of any responsible gambling tools caps rating at 7.5
- No live chat support during normal business hours caps rating at 7.5
Why We Don’t Use Affiliate Commission as a Factor
This should be obvious but it isn’t, given how the industry actually operates. We don’t include affiliate commission rates, exclusive bonus availability, or business relationship strength in any scoring category. Our rating system is structurally separated from our affiliate operations, as detailed in our editorial policy.
This means we sometimes give lower ratings to operators we have stronger commercial relationships with, and higher ratings to operators we don’t have relationships with at all. The rating reflects what we found during testing, full stop.
How Often Ratings Change
Ratings are reassessed at minimum every six months, sooner if any of the following happen: ownership change, license modification, significant terms revision, or accumulated complaints pattern. When a rating changes substantially, the change is noted in the review with a brief explanation.
We do not adjust ratings based on operator requests, advertising spend, or affiliate negotiations. We’ve moved casinos down in our rankings while they were spending more with us, and we’ve moved them up when there was no commercial incentive to do so.
